DuPont™ Corian® is a solid, pore-free material, an advanced aluminum and acrylic trihydrate (PMMA) compound, developed as a practical material for daily living. Corian® ensures wide design possibilities, functional and durable. By working with plates we can make them adopt practically all kinds of shapes, always giving the 10 year guarantee that DuPont™ offers being handled only by a Quality workshop as in our case (see Certified Abelló Taller Quality Diploma). BASIC MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES: DuPont™ Corian® is a material that combines the durability of the stone with the ductility of the wood. It is impossible to relate in this book all the techniques of manufacture, but the following sections describe the most important.
CUT: DuPont™ Corian® is harder than wood. To cut an iron and get the desired parts, saws and milling machines must be powerful enough to work the material. For straight cuts, a circular saw with carbide or diamond teeth is recommended for bends, a manual or numerical control (CNC) milling machine depending on the number of identical parts to be cut. Rounded inner corners are milled to prevent cracking. The strawberries must be carbide or tungsten.
UNIONS: All edges of the pieces for bonding should be straight, square and thoroughly cleaned using ethanol on a clean white cloth before applying the adhesive. Two components of the Corian® DuPont™ sealant in appropriate color combination will be used to make invaluable joints, one of the hallmarks of DuPont™ Corian®.
SANDING: The surfaces are sanded with an orbital sander following "North-South" and "East-West" movements making small circular motions. Sanding is done in several steps and with decreasing degrees of roughness. The finish can be varied from matt to glossy, depending on the effect the designer wants. DuPont™ suggests a semi-matt finish, because it is easy to get and maintain. Bright finishes tend to fade over time especially in areas of heavy use.
